Membership Officer

What Does The Membership Officer Do?

The Membership Officer in Freemasonry is a new position and one which is included in all most lodges under the United Grand Lodge of England. The purpose of this role could vary but in general, it is to take a more proactive role in recruiting people into Freemasonry. Also, and equally, it is to ensure we make the most of all the membership enquiries we receive.

It is very much a people-orientated position where you are often the first port of call to someone expressing an interest in what we do.

Candidate Attraction: Freemasonry has adapted over history so it’s adapting again post Covid. This part of the role involves inspiring and encouraging all Lodge members to identify suitable candidates for Freemasonry.

Supporting Introductions: This role plays a critical part in supporting those members who do find suitable people to join Freemasonry and to help them to enable that transition.

An Advisory Role: To advise the Lodge committee, interview panel and sponsors of potential new members. Also, to assist the Lodge Secretary if required to ensure all prospective members are given the best experience they can.

Raising A Lodges Profile: Often being the first port of contact for someone wanting to join Freemasonry, this role is often the ‘shop front’ into finding out if we are right for them as an organisation. To be a welcoming conduit for people interested in joining our specific Lodge or another.

Identifying Prospective Candidates: Helping to find the right people to join and advising them on what the process is, its time commitment and the costs.

Creating A Lodge Plan: To submit a Lodge plan and to agree with others in the Lodge, then enact and lead that plan for the benefit of all.

The Membership Officers’ role is one which is ever-evolving. It doesn’t have the centuries of history behind it and it’s incumbent on all Freemasons to help with welcoming new people into what we do.

Other Lodges may use this role differently based upon their needs however, as the active Officer of the Lodge, dealing with this it’s a good opportunity to get to know others. Also, it’s hugely rewarding to welcome new Freemasons coming into your own Lodge, knowing you played a part in them really enjoying Masonry.

If a Lodge was thought of as akin to a business the Membership Officer would be the Human Resources director or manager. Someone who looks to ensure we have enough like-minded people within the Lodge and that it is in good health.
